Hide with Humour, Seek with Controversy
“The show, which can
be seen on YouTube and other websites, was extremely abusive and it is not only
ruining the clean image of the Indian culture & women but is also
misleading today's youth” (AIB)
“GOI has banned Comedy
Central for misogynist jokes.”
“Comedian arrested for
hurting sentimental and religious feelings”
These are some of the news that come up in our daily read,
parallel to the many rapes and murders that occur. And being true bred Indians we
take up the controversy instead of the crime. Its more like there are no
controversies, we just pluck them from the crowd and run after it. The arrest, banning
and criticism of humour comes in a country where immoral comments against women
and unsuitable situations have been made by popular names time and time again. To
quote politicians when talking about rape, “boys will be boys” “rape should not
be made such a hyper issue” are the popular remarks. Yeah this is what the
ideal India needs. In a country with such a rich tradition of women and culture
there’s being a confusion between intolerating what and tolerating what. We are banning
humour and tolerating obscene inhumane comments, ignoring them all the way to
the extent that it becomes a laughing matter. When all the time this should be
the reaction expected for a comedy controversy. India has progressively become
a country with lots of comedians but no sense of humour.
The arresting of comedians in the name of hurting “sentimental
and religious feelings” is such a hypocrisy when all around each religion
preaches the thought of tolerance and acceptance of what is indeed hateful. Furthermore
freedom of India is not only in terms of speech and writing but also in what we
see and read. For example, taking the AIB knockout, it raked in a million views
with thousands hating it and then complaining. Now who told them to watch? Even
when the video was rated adult with repeated warnings of obscene content people
did the effort. And it wasn’t like the show was aired on tv. One had to open
their computer/laptop/tablet/smartphone, spend their precious mobile data/wifi,
open Youtube, search the video and after several minutes when the video was
found they had the advisory warning which they had to deliberately ignore while
waiting for the almost 2 hour long video to load, FOREVER! This much effort
just to hate a video that you already knew wouldn’t suit your taste? Now that’s
what I call running after controversies!
Its that simple guys, love it see it, don’t love it don’t
see it. The common phrase comes in mind, “dekho
magar pyar se.”
In times where grievous
happenings have made the country sad and weeping there are few people who are
taking the initiative to fight off the terror by making jokes at the expense of
oneself and others. Satire is the best form of representing the truth open and
free while also not blowing it into a daily soap which many of the newspaper
and media channels do nowadays. If this practice is banned we can very well
accept the country to go monarchic, seeking only the likes of the majority and
living in fear of hurting “feelings” while altogether missing the joke! So the next time you hear about an inappropriate joke, just plug your ears and sing "prem ratan dhan payo" Atleast you'll have a reason for intolerance!
thats all for this time guys. hope you enjoyed it. make peace with the world but also with the world that resides at your home. comments/feedback/suggestions are always invited. share if you liked it and want to enlighten the world!
